RCA universal remote codes, by revision number
RCA universal remote codes depend on the revision number printed in the battery compartment. Most remotes on RCA's support site today are revision R271U1, R341U1 or R3F802, and all three use 5-digit codes. For a Samsung TV, R271U1 lists 21818 first, R341U1 lists 43311 and R3F802 lists 12051. The key sequence also differs by revision, so use the steps for yours below.

How to enter a code on RCA R271U1
- Manually turn on the device you want to control.
- Find your brand under the right device type in the code list and keep those five-digit codes handy.
- Press and hold the device key you want to program for about 2 seconds, until the indicator light comes on and stays on. Release the device key.
- Type the first five-digit code for your brand. The indicator flashes after each digit.
- After the fifth digit, look at the indicator. If the indicator turns off, the device key is programmed. If it stays lit, the code isn't in this remote's lists or a step was missed; type the code again.

4-digit or 5-digit? It depends on the revision
If your code list has 4-digit codes but your remote needs five (or the other way around), you have the wrong list. From RCA's finder data:
- 5-digit: R271U1, R271U2, R341U1, R3F802, 20022, 20037, 20047, 20052, 20174, 20189, 20301, 20401, 20473, 20474, 25394, 25582, 25592, 25604, 25641, 25651, 25693, 25947, 25972, 26011, 26102, 26211.

How to program an RCA universal remote
RCA publishes separate setup videos for R271U1 and R271U2 and for “all other revision numbers,” and the manuals differ too. Use the steps for your revision.
Direct code entry (RCA R271U1 and R271U2)
- Manually turn on the device you want to control.
- Find your brand under the right device type in the code list and keep those five-digit codes handy.
- Press and hold the device key you want to program for about 2 seconds, until the indicator light comes on and stays on. Release the device key.
- Type the first five-digit code for your brand. The indicator flashes after each digit.
- After the fifth digit, look at the indicator. If the indicator turns off, the device key is programmed. If it stays lit, the code isn't in this remote's lists or a step was missed; type the code again.
Test before you keep a code. Try a range of the device's functions. If some features don't work, program the next code for your brand.
If no listed code works: All Brand Code Search
- Press and hold the device key for about 2 seconds, until the indicator lights and stays on. Release it.
- Type the device-type code: 11111 for a TV, 22222 for a VCR, 33333 for a streaming player, 44444 for a satellite receiver, cable box or digital TV converter, or 55555 for a DVD or Blu-ray player. The indicator turns off after the fifth digit.
- Manually turn on the device.
- Press and hold the same device key for about 2 seconds until the indicator lights, then release it.
- Point the remote at the device and press PLAY. The remote sends the on/off command for a new code every 2 seconds. When the device turns off, press STOP to store that code. If the device turned off but you took more than 2 seconds to press STOP, press PLAY to step back through the last few codes, then press STOP when the device turns back on.
Direct code entry (RCA R341U1)
- Manually turn on the device you want to control.
- Find your brand under the right device type in the code list and keep those five-digit codes handy.
- Press and hold the device key you want to program for about 2 seconds, until the POWER key lights up and stays on. Release the device key.
- Type the first five-digit code for your brand. The POWER key flashes after each digit.
- Test POWER, VOL+, CH+ and 0. If they work, this key is programmed. If not, repeat steps 3 and 4 with the next code for your brand.
Test before you keep a code. Some codes control only basic functions, so try the other buttons you use too, and move on to the next code if any don't respond.

Direct code entry (RCA R3F802)
- Manually turn on the device you want to control.
- Find your brand under the right device type in the code list and keep those five-digit codes handy.
- Press and hold the device key you want to program; the POWER key lights up. Keep holding the device key the whole time and type the first five-digit code with your other hand. The POWER key light turns off after the first digit.
- After the fifth digit, keep holding the device key and look at the POWER key. If it stays lit, the device key is programmed. If it blinks four times and turns off, the code isn't in the lists or a step was missed; try again.
Test before you keep a code. If some features don't work, program the next code for your brand.
If you let go of the device key during entry, the POWER key blinks four times and the remote leaves programming mode, keeping the last stored code. If no listed code works, the manual offers a Brand Code Search, an Auto Code Search and a Manual Code Search. Open the manual (PDF).
Programming other RCA revisions
Test before you keep a code. RCA notes that more than one code may work. Some codes control only power and volume; others add input, menu, DVR or playback buttons. Test several buttons and move on to the next code if any don't respond.
For these revisions, follow RCA's setup videos: there is a direct-code video for each device type for “all other revision numbers.” We haven't found written steps from RCA for them, so we don't print any here. Open RCA's setup videos.

Code not working? Match the symptom
Each answer restates the manufacturer's own troubleshooting advice; the source is under each one.
The light doesn't do what the steps describe
Jasco says the most common cause is bad batteries, even brand-new ones: try a different set.
On RCA R271U1 remotes, an indicator that stays lit after the fifth digit means the code is not in that remote's lists or a step was missed. On R3F802 remotes, a POWER key that blinks four times means the same thing, or that the device key was released during entry.
Power works, but volume, input or menu buttons don't
The stored code only partly matches your device. Program the next code listed for your brand and test again; the manufacturers say several codes can work, and some control more buttons than others. A button can also fail because the device's own remote never had that feature, such as a sleep timer.
Volume works, but the channels don't change
If a cable box, satellite receiver or converter box changes your channels, the channel buttons have to control that box, not the TV. Program the box on its own device button (for example CBL or SAT) and change channels in that mode.
The menu won't open, or the arrow buttons do nothing
Jasco remotes may need shift mode: press and release SETUP, then press MENU or the arrows while the red light is blinking. On RCA R271U1 remotes, the SHIFT key turns CHAN and VOL into arrow keys and ENTER into OK; press SHIFT again to leave shift mode. If that fails, try another code for your brand.
The code is rejected or has the wrong number of digits
You're probably using a list for a different version. Jasco CL codes are always 4 digits. RCA revisions R271U1, R341U1 and R3F802 use 5-digit codes, while older revisions such as 31862 use 4 digits. Check the label in the battery compartment and pick that exact version in the finder.
No code is listed for my brand, or none of the codes work
Use your remote's automatic code search (the steps are on each remote's page). It tries every code stored in the remote for that device type, so it can find a code even when your brand isn't on the printed list.
The remote forgot its codes after a battery change
Jasco remotes keep programmed codes for up to 10 minutes while the batteries are out. RCA's manual warns that remotes can lose their programming during a battery change and asks you to keep the code list, so write down the codes that worked.
