How to tell which list your remote uses

The version is printed on the remote itself. Look inside the battery compartment:

Code length narrows it a little. Every Jasco CL code has 4 digits, so a 5-digit code cannot come from a CL list. A 4-digit code can come from any CL list or from one of the 9 RCA revisions that use 4 digits (25384, 25612, 26207, 31503, 31794, 31862, 202815, D770, D771). Only the label tells CL3 from CL6, or R271U1 from R341U1.

GE, Philips and UltraPro: the four Jasco lists

These remotes use the same lists under three brand names, so one table covers all of them. A brand entry is one brand under one device type; the codes are counted once per entry.

CL3 has no streaming player, soundbar or projector section, and CL6 is the only list with a projector section (62 brands). Device types are our grouping of each list's own section labels, so a 0 means no section with a matching label, not proof that the remote cannot control that device.

What changed between versions

For each step we matched brands one to one. Identical list means the same codes in the same order. Same codes, new order means nothing was added or removed. Codes added or removed means at least one code differs. A brand is added or dropped when only one of the two lists has an entry for it.

CL3 to CL4 changed the codes for 87 of the 230 TV brands both lists carry, and CL4 has no entry for 53 TV brands that CL3 lists. CL4 to CL5 is a small step: 229 of 260 shared TV brands are identical, 9 brands are new and 1 was dropped. CL5 to CL6 is the large loss: 91 TV brands have no CL6 entry, and 482 of 1,046 brand entries across all device types are gone, while CL6 adds 155.

Codes per version for the popular TV brands

How many codes each list holds for the TV brands with their own page, and what the step changed. The codes are on each brand's page; this table only counts them.

Samsung, LG, Sony and TCL have far fewer codes on CL4 to CL6 than on CL3. For Samsung, 28 of CL3's 29 codes are not in CL4, so a list written for CL3 includes codes a CL4, CL5 or CL6 remote does not list.

Exactly which TV codes changed from CL4 to CL5

CL4 and CL5 are close enough that the whole difference fits in one table. It lists only the codes that differ, not the lists. 7 more TV brands keep the same codes in a different order.

HP is listed twice, as dropped and as added: CL5 prints it as HP (HEWLETT PACKARD) with the same code, 3491.

For CL3 to CL4 and CL5 to CL6 the differences run to hundreds of codes (772 and 310 TV codes), so they are counted in the tables above and per brand in the CSV rather than listed here.

Brand names as each list prints them. A dropped brand has codes in the older list and none in the newer one.

RCA: 35 revisions that are not versions of one list

RCA numbers its lists by revision, and we found no order or dates for the revisions, so there is no “step” to compare. What the data does show is how far apart they are. The three revisions on RCA's current code-list sheets share almost nothing:

5 sets of revisions carry identical lists (20174 = 20301 = 20401; 25582 = 25641; 25592 = 25651; R271U1 = R271U2; D770 = D771). Every other pair differs. Which models use which revision is on the RCA page.

If your remote's list has no entry for your brand

It happens most on CL6, which has no entry for 91 TV brands that CL5 lists, among them Sears, Yamaha, Kenwood and Onkyo. Two things to try before buying anything: run the remote's automatic code search, which tries every code stored in the remote and needs no list (automatic code search steps), and check the spelling of the brand, because makers rename entries between versions.

If you are replacing the remote instead of reusing one, the lists we read show how many of those 91 brands each version still lists: CL5 91, CL4 90, RCA's R271U1 77, R341U1 63 and R3F802 9. RCA prints the revision on each model's code list, not in the model name, so match the model against the RCA model table (RCR003RWDE, RCR3273E, RCR414BHE, RCR503BE and 6 more are R271U1) before you buy. • GE, Philips and UltraPro: codes per brand for CL3 to CL6 (CSV, 1,413 rows). Device type, brand, code count in each list, and for each step whether the list is the same, reordered or changed, with codes added and removed.
• RCA: codes per brand for all 35 revisions (CSV, 2,133 rows). Device type, brand and one code-count column per revision.

A blank cell means the list has no entry for that brand and device type. The files hold counts and differences only, never the code lists, and every count in the tables above comes from them. Data as of September 24, 2026.

Method

• Sources. Jasco's universal remote code page (the CL3 to CL6 lists) and the data files behind RCA's Remote Code Finder, both read on September 24, 2026 and read again on September 30, 2026, when neither had changed. Every code is stored as published, leading zeros and order kept. Sources are listed at the end.
• Unit. One brand entry is one brand under one device type. Device types are our grouping of each maker's section labels (for example, TV/DVD and TV/VCR combos are one type, Combo unit). Brand names are matched exactly after ignoring case, spaces and punctuation, never fuzzily, so a renamed entry counts as one drop and one add. Examples in the data: GE became GE (GENERAL ELECTRIC) in CL4, HP became HP (HEWLETT PACKARD) in CL5, and HONEYWELL TV became HONEYWELL in CL6.
• Codes listed. A code counts once per brand entry. Where a maker prints one brand under two labels we group together, the repeated code counts once, so our totals sit below the printed rows: CL3 4,516 against 4,631 printed, CL4 3,755 against 3,870 printed, CL5 3,860 against 3,976 printed, CL6 2,945 against 3,021 printed.
• Steps. A step compares one list with the next issued: CL3 to CL4, CL4 to CL5, CL5 to CL6. Codes gained and lost include the codes of brands added or dropped.
• Reproduce it. A script recomputes every number and CSV row from the stored lists, and automated tests check the comparison logic against hand-built examples and against a second, independent count. Re-reading the makers' pages flags any list that changed since September 24, 2026.
• Testing. Nothing here was tried on a physical remote. The counts describe what the lists contain, not whether a code works.

What this page does not cover

• One For All. One For All publishes its codes per remote model, and this site has not added them yet, so there are no One For All counts here.
• Philips. Philips remotes with a CL label use Jasco's lists and are counted in the CL columns. The only list Philips itself publishes that we read is its CL4 PDF, compared with Jasco's CL4 on the Philips page; we did not recompute that comparison here, and we have no Philips-published CL3, CL5 or CL6 list to check. Philips remotes without a CL label use other systems.
• RCA order. We found no order or dates for RCA revisions, so only the three on RCA's current sheets are compared with each other; the rest are counted.
• Other remotes. onn, cable and satellite company remotes, and any remote whose maker does not publish a list.
• Later changes. Both makers can update a list after September 24, 2026. Until this page is updated, it describes the lists as read that day.
